The three types of sports handicapping are: 1) situational, 2) fundamental, and 3) technical. These are discussed briefly in this article.

Situational sports handicapping involves looking at the particular circumstances of an upcoming game. Motivation and schedule are often good indicators of which team has the situational advantage.

Take a team that doesn’t have much motivation to win any more games and a team that needs just one more win to perfect their season. The latter team would have the situational advantage, as they have a substantial motive to give their best in an upcoming game.

The second type of sports handicapping is called fundamental handicapping. Here, statistical records are used to analyze each team carefully. A team with great defensive statistics, for example, would have an advantage over a team with poor defense. Accordingly, an individual making a basketball bet would certainly want to take fundamental handicap into consideration.

Technical handicapping is the last sports handicapping category. In this type of handicapping, winning patterns are used. For instance, some teams have better win records when they play at their home court. Hence, at a home game, these teams would have a technical advantage.
